A low level of vitamin D in the body is associated with muscle weakness and is common among seniors, according to a sudy published in the American Journal of Clincial Nutrition1.  Even in healthy elderly people, the lack of vitamin D is accompanied by a reduction in muscle mass and muscle strength2.

Seniors are prone to develop a low vitamin D level  because of decreased dietary intake, diminished sunlight exposure, reduced skin thickness, impaired intestinal absorption and impaired hydroxylation in the liver and kidneys.  Adequate levels of vitamin D in the body can protect an individual from muscle deterioration and weakness that causes falls, a leading cause of death among the elderly.
